November 29, 2004, Madison Heights, MI - In just eight short weeks, Jonathan B. Smith of Keego Harbor, MI raised more than $70,000 to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, a stellar accomplishment that won him the Michigan Man of the Year and landed him in first place in the Society's National Man of the Year Campaign.

Smith, Managing Director of Wave Dispersion Technologies, a maritime port security and erosion control technology company, raised money through a series of online advertisements, which drove traffic to a special Website(www.fundraisingforleukemia.org) he created for donations. The site explained his motivation for raising funds and mission to help the Society fund lifesaving research and provide services to patients and their families.

"The experience was exhilarating and exciting," said Smith. "I liked the fact that I could use my professional skills to give back to the community. It's a good feeling helping others."

Smith raised money in honor of the children of two friends, who are battling leukemia. He has also raised funds for the Society as a past participant of its Team in Training endurance sports training program and the Leukemia Cup Regatta in St. Clair Shores.

"We congratulate Jonathan and all the candidates who participated in this year's Man & Woman of the Year campaign," said Marcia Fosnaugh Avis, Michigan's Event Chairperson. "He is a truly exceptional man with superb community outreach and fundraising skills. His efforts help the Society advance its mission: Cure leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.

Every five minutes, someone new is diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma, every 10 minutes, someone dies from these cancers," Fosnaugh Avis said.

Candidates are judged solely on the basis of their success in generating funds and compete in honor of the Society's Boy and Girl of the Year, children who are survivors of blood cancers and provide a strong source of inspiration. This year's national Girl of the Year, Jessica Nunnally, 13, from Oak Park, Michigan, was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) in June of 2000 and is currently in remission. Both Smith and Nunnally were featured in USA Today.

The Michigan Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is gearing up for the 2005 Man & Woman of the Year campaign which will kick-off in February. Participation in the Man & Woman of the Year is a great way for candidates to gain personal and professional exposure in the Detroit metro community. Individuals interested in nominating themselves or others as participants in the 2005 Man & Woman of the Year campaign should contact the Michigan Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society at (248) 582-2900, ext. 3124.
