(WDT) is pleased to report that it recently sponsored Team #1257 in the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition. The FIRST Robotics Competition is a multinational competition that teams professionals and young people to solve an engineering design problem in an intense competitive way. The program is a life-changing, career-moulding experience. The 2005 competition included over 25,000 high school participants from 1,000 teams across the globe. Our team was started in 2003 by Dr. Gail VanEkeren at the Union County Magnet High School in Scotch Plains, NJ . It was built into Magnet's pre-existing Technology Club, and has now expanded to include two other schools on the same campus, the Union County Vocational Technical High School and the Academy for Information Technologies. Our team consists of approximately 52 members, 40 students and 12 adult mentors including teachers, engineers, parents, and alumni. FIRST requires massive amounts of commitment, not only from students and mentors but also in terms of financial support. This year the team was privileged to have several sponsors ranging from major corperations to local pizzerias. Thanks to their support, we have been able to successfully fund all of our endeavors. FIRST was founded in 1989 by Dean Kamen, inventor of the Segway Human Transporter. FIRST operates the FIRST Robotics Competition in which teams of high school students, sponsored and assisted by local companies and volunteers, design, assemble, and test a robot capable of performing a specified task in competition with other teams. FIRST also runs the FIRST LEGO League, for children 9-14 years old, and FIRST Place, an innovative science and technology center, including a hands-on children's science museum.
