WhisprWave® Rapidly Deployed
Small Craft Intrusion Barrier™ A solution for maritime locations
requiring non-permanent floating security barriers
Background
In many cases stakeholders in the maritime domain
have expressed reluctance to the installation of permanently installed
Floating Security Barriers(FSB). These stakeholders understand the importance
of FSB's at elevated MARSEC
levels, but have expressed concern about FSB's impact on port operations
at lower MARSEC levels.
In response to these concerns, Wave Dispersion
Technologies, Inc.(WDT), inventors of the WhisprWave® line of FSB's,
has developed the Rapidly Deployed Small Craft Intrusion Barrier™(RD-SCIB™),"the
unit."
Description
The RD-SCIB™ consists of 160 linear feet
of stacked WhisprWave® Small
Craft Intrusion Barrier™(SCIB™) measuring 20 ft. X 8 ft.
X 8 ft., which is strapped to a platform, "oversized pallet,"
that is easily moveable. The RD-SCIB™ is shrink wrapped prior to
shipment and designed for an indefinite storage life on land.
The oversized pallet weighs approximately 6,000
lbs. and is utilized as an anchor during deployment. The 160 feet of SCIB™
has 51,000 lbs. of buoyancy, which is used to float the unit into position.
Deployment
For deployment the RD-SCIB™ requires a
forklift or crane of sufficient size to move a standard 20 foot container.
When the MARSEC level dictates or the Captain of the Port so orders, the
unit is placed in the water by forklift or crane, and towed to the pre-determined
installation location. When the unit is properly positioned, a lanyard
attached to pelican hooks is used to simultaneously release the three
binding straps that retain the SCIB™
on the oversized pallet. The SCIB™ separates from the oversized
pallet, which then becomes a 6,000 lbs. anchor. The SCIB™ floats
on the surface extending 80 feet from each side of the anchor. The floating
ends of the SCIB™ can then be attached to either another RD-SCIB™
unit, shore points, or previously installed permanent anchors, all of
which are designed to enclose the exclusion zone.
Recovery
When the MARSEC level is lowered and/or
the Captain of the Port so decides, the RD-SCIB™ is designed to
be recovered, repackaged, and stowed for future use. The recovery operation
can be accomplished either by WDT personnel or properly certified local
contractors or staff.
